SUNSHINE SMILES IN NAIROBI

Sister Sally of the Sisters of Mercy and Nairobi executive Bob Paterson obviously delighted with the children’s craft kits presented to the Mukuru Promotion Centre by Project Sunshine. The Centre provides primary education and a daily meal for over 4,000 children from the sprawling informal settlements adjoining the Kenyan capital’s industrial area. It also provides basic health care, works to rehabilitate street children and operates a skills training centre. Sister Sally is the centre’s program manager and Mr Paterson is a volunteer who assists with fund-raising and strategic planning.

OPEN DAY AT MUKURU PROMOTION CENTRE 2 AUGUST 2008

Enthusiasm for organizing another Open Day at MPC emanated from the Department Heads. Sr Angela encouraged this very positive energy and agreed to chair the planning committee for the 2008 Open Day. Staff from the Departments of Health, Education, social Work, Finance, Administration, Skills Training and Mary Immaculate Rehabilitation Centre organized their own particular exhibitions. T-shirts of various styles and sizes were ordered, emblazoned with the MPC logo and slogan, “Promoting the dignity of all”. You can buy one at a very reasonable price.

Scouts from Mary Immaculate marched in the opening parade, and the guard of honour was inspected by Sr Mary Keilleen who then officially opened the day with a prayer. Guests of Honour included Sr Liz Fletcher and members of the Provincial Leadership Team of the sisters of Mercy, Vincent Ateya, a past pupil of Mukuru who is a radio announcer at Citizen; the Village Chief from Hazina and his Assistant, and the outgoing Director of MPC, Sr Teresia. Members of the Board of Management were represented, along with journalists from media outlets.

Entertainment was provided by the primary school students, and was most enjoyable. St Elizabeth’s choir, the Mukuru band, St Bakhita’s dancing, the MIRC dancing and the acrobats were all highly entertaining indeed. We featured in the “Nation” on Monday, with a stunning picture of our clever acrobats.

The aims of the day were to:

• Create awareness of the existence of MPC and the many services that are provided by the organization

• Acknowledge our Donors

• Bring employees together

• Invite support from the local community
